PTO, Flextime, 40 hour week
Hello. I am the CFOO for a small organization with 10 full-time employees and I am one of three people considered “leadership”. I manage HR, IT, and Finance along with some other duties. We have a fully remote work environment with the exception of some meetings and events employees are expected to attend. We do provide mileage reimbursement for travel more than 50 miles round trip from their home office except when a meeting is at our office HQ, in which case there is no reimbursement. (This happens maybe 4 times per year.)
PTO policy is employees receive 176 hours of PTO per year and can roll over 96 hours. PTO should be requested 14 days in advance. All employees are salaried employees. Currently employees can take PTO in one hour increments. I know that employees often take time during the day for personal appointments without taking PTO (hair cuts, dentist, doctor, etc.)
Recently an employee has said they should receive flextime for working an evening and weekend event. We offer no flextime since they are all salaried employees and the expectation is they work to get the job done. Additionally, the employee is the one who created the activities for which they are working in the evening and half-day Saturday. Furthermore this employee blocks their calendar every day from 8 am to 9 am to take their kids to school and from 4-5 to pick them up from school. We’ve never pushed back on this as we are very family first as an organization.
However, the employee in question has thrown quite the tantrum about flextime. But I’m thinking we are already allowing you flextime on a regular basis with two hours per day blocked for kid duty and we’ve never asked you to make that up. And now because she has some events on Saturdays (again that they planned), they expect to get random half-days off.
Help me make it make sense. I don’t want to be unreasonable but I’m also responsible to ensure all employees are treated equally and that work is being completed.
